Restaurants in Melbourne

My name is Matt and I’m a food lover who also loves caffeine. I’ve been to countless restaurants, coffee shops and cafes in my three years living in Melbourne. To save you the trouble of going through hundreds of reviews – here are some of my favourites:

The Glen – Half Moon Cafe

A dainty mix of fresh flowers sits atop each uniquely-made breakfast dish as well as the front entrance’s doorstep. People come from far and wide for its homely atmosphere, great tasting breakfast menu and fantastic service. Without fail, every morning at half past eight the cafe is full so be sure to get there early! Special mention: The Best Eggs Benny in Australia (without exaggeration)

Melbourne Central – Market Lane Coffee

Market Lane Coffee is a hipster’s paradise. You can walk to the end of an underpass that runs under the railway tracks and catch a glimpse of the trendy, hip cafe. There are exposed brick walls, large communal tables and excellently-made coffee which you will discover upon tasting their famous ‘flat white’. Special Mention: Smoked Salmon on Toast with Rocket and Chives.

The Vic Markets/Flinders Street Station – Bimbo Deluxe Some may say this restaurant has gone downhill over the past few years but I still enjoy it for its tradtional diner style food at cheap prices (compared to other restaurants with the same standard of food). A meal for two that includes 2 mains, 2 drinks and a shared dessert costs around $40 – extremely affordable. The meals are large and delicious and it is always busy. There is often a long wait to be seated but it’s worth it. Special mention: Roast Pork with Crackling

CBD – Vue de Monde Despite its hefty price tag ($200-300 per head), exceptional service, finely crafted food and classy atmosphere make this one of my favourites in Melbourne (if not Australia). Yes, you will leave having spent more than enough however you will also have had one of the best culinary experiences in life. It makes for an ideal wedding anniversary or birthday dinner as well as catching up with friends who you haven’t seen in a while. Special mention: The Red Snapper cooked in Salt Bae style (but better)

Southbank Promenade/Docklands – Hellenic Republic Being only 10 minutes walk from where I live, this BYO restaurant is one of my go-to eateries for any special occasion including date night with the girlfriend and long lunches with friends. You can easily find people there having dinner or drinks during the week too plus it’s open until midnight (later if it’s busy). There are more than enough menus filled with Greek delicacies which you will struggle to choose between! Special Mention: Pork belly slow roasted on bed of leeks & potatoes
